Female Councillors Voice Allegations of Misogyny

Dear fellow ODA members,

Concerns have been raised about a culture that suppresses dissenting voices and fosters an environment where female members at times feel unsafe or intimidated. Disagreements and discussions are natural components of board governance; however, when opposing views are dismissed as “unconstructive,” it suggests an underlying control issue rather than genuine debate. Straightforward and to-the-point mannerisms that would be accepted from male Board members are often characterized as “overly harsh” when exhibited by female councillors, reinforcing the gender-based double standard in professional discourse.

More troubling are reports of intimidation and bullying targeting female Board members. One female Director recounted being verbally attacked in a private meeting, brought to tears, and denied the right to have a witness present—despite multiple requests.

Another female Board member, expressed fear of meeting alone with male members since two previous female Past-Presidents had lodged formal complaints for aggressive behaviour from male Board members, highlighting a concerning pattern of intimidation. Reports include a senior male Director invading the personal space of a female Past President, pointing fingers in her face, and verbally berating her. He ultimately resigned without transparency about the circumstances leading to his departure.

The lack of open discussion or formal investigations into these incidents raises serious concerns about governance and accountability. These events underscore the urgent need for a transparent and impartial review process to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all Board members, regardless of gender. Misogyny and intimidation should have no place in professional governance.
